Len's Story
"I was always taught if you’re knocked down, get up, carry on, and have another go – and that’s what I have to do."
Between his own diagnosis of bladder cancer and his wife’s eventual diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, Len has had to think a lot of about both of their health. And as his wife’s primary carer, this has meant finding ways to take care of one another in every sense. Thanks to local community organisations, Len has found ways for both of them to be supported emotionally, practically, and physically. From a local lunch club that provides a bit of socialising to heading out for picnics together, both Len and his wife keep on their feet.
How Len Gets Moving
Len loves his garden – during lockdown, it has been a kind of sanctuary – and he tends to the plants as a way to keep moving around the home. In addition to making sure he’s active, he looks for ways to keep his wife moving, too. Pre-COVID-19, that meant regular visits to the Batley Lunch Club, where the two would chat with others and get up for the occasional dance. Nowadays, they do “lunch club” as a duo, going on walks and taking picnics outdoors.
